On-site personnel:
The AGO team consisted of Kevin Killilea (Field personnel/Groomer) and
Joe Kujawski (AGO technical service team). At the resuply flight,
Joe Kujawski left and three carpenters arrived to help remove equipment
left in previous years.
Station:
The station was cold upon arrival. The thermo-electric generator
(TEG) lost function when it ran out of fuel. Both the exhaust and
the air intake were
clogged. There were two leaks in the freon system which had caused
all freon to leak from the system.
The technical service team successfully started the TEG.
The CAGOSYS upgrade (to the same Revision level as the rest of the stations)
was completed. Additionally, a 100 lb propane cylinder located outside
the
AGO shelter was plumbed for cooking.
AGO-5 was targeted to be raised this year and will be raised by the
second crew to arrive on station.
TEG:
The TEG was upgraded to add a forced combustion air delivery system,
called the Turbo, and to make it compatible with the new station configuration.
Additional noise suppresion (capacitors and inductors) were added to
the Turbo electronics to reduce EMI to an acceptable level.
Batteries for the electronic shutoff valve were changed. Manifold
propane pressure was set to 3.5 psi. The maximum burner temperatures
that could
be achieved are: #1: **, #2: **, #3: 220 deg C, #4: 210 deg C, #5:
210 deg C, #6: 200 deg C (** Burners 1 and 2 were adjusted for a peak voltage
since thethermo-couples for these burners were broken and could not be
repaired).
This TEG has significant corrosion in all of the terminal blocks and
many ofthe other areas of the TEG. There were 5 separate electrical
failures due to
corrosion (one of which caused the station to lose 1/6th of it's power).
Data Control Unit (DCU):
The old storage computers were reomved from the station. The
amount of data recorded to disk was:

CAGODCU Rev. 1 was installed. Also installed were two Storage
computers (Rev 2, SN: 017 and 010). Storage computer STO017 indicated
that it had lost its pressure, but was left in place since there was no
pressurized storage computerto replace it. Note: station is missing
one ACAB036 (strorage computer cable).
Power Supply Controller (PSC):
CAGOPSC Rev. 2 was installed without any problems.
See AGO5.AGO for experiment power settings, priorities, and other station
information.
Data Acquisition Unit (DAU):
All functions were normal when the unit was turned on.
Non-volatile random access memory was replaced. See AGO1.AGO for
DAU settings.
(Note: all data can be found atftp://space.augsburg.edu/pub/ago)
Global Positioning System Receiver (GPS):
The GPS was functional when the AGO electronics were turned on.
Bell Labs Fluxgate Magnetometer:
Data was examined to verify the operation and leveling of the magnetometer.
Historical data from December 1,2 were examined and it was determined that
the leveling was proper for this site. During the tesing of the unit,
it was found that the H axis alias filter was not functioning properly
and was replaced. New leveling information can be found in
P599_F_H.GIF.
Over the last season, the range setting was 500nT. This was changed to 1000nT.
New settings for the magnetometer are:
Sensitivity :
1000 nT
H Offset : +
00 05 400
D Offset : OFF
00 00 000
Z Offset :

The electronics were checked out per the servicing documentation. The results of the checkout were as follows (note that only the values for the H axis with the new alias filter are listed):

The secondary ground on the experiment was already connected to chassis.
Tohuku ULF Search Coil:
Tohuku was upgraded per CAGOULFM. Sample data was recorded to
disk.
Stanford VLF Receiver:
The Stanford experiment was not calibrated since the calibrator went
to AGO-6. Data was collected and examined for possible problems.
A problem was seen withchannel 14 (16-32 KHZ N-S) which is shown in P599_C14.GIF.
Since this problem was only seen in one channel, the experiment was left
in the field.

University of Maryland Riometer:
Historical data was examined as was new data. The experiment
seems to be functioning properly. See P599_RI1.GIF
and
P599_RI2.GIF
for collected data.
Anubis Seismic:
Not installed at this site.
Dartmouth LF/HF Receiver:
Data was collected and examined on the Dartmouth experiment.
Sample data can be seen in P599_LFH.GIF.
Allsky camera:
The battery was replaced. The allsky camera was upgraded to CAGOALLM
Rev. 1. The calibration flashlight was used to collect sample data.
One image is present in P599_ALL.GIF.
During the entire collection time, only 2 second exposures were seen.
The integration LED did indicate that 16 second exposures were taking place,
but these images could not be viewed form the service computer.
Miscellaneous:
GPS position: S 77 deg 14' E 123 deg 31'. Elevation: 3519
m.
Notes for the future:
1) Experimenters that provide cable for outside use should provide cables
that are cold-friendly and are flexible at -40 C.
2) Experiments that provide junction boxes and connection points outside
the AGO should allow for the fact that these connections will be made by
people with gloves and should have adequate spacing between the connectors.
3) Bring an ACAB036 to AGO-5 next year.
4) All hardware that goes from the outside of the AGO to the inside
of the AGO should be made of stainless steel to prevent rest formation.
5) Replace the Left solar panel at this station.
